MYSTERY JAM MONDAY PART 224

Welcome to the 224th edition of Phish.Net's Mystery Jam Monday. I've posted three clips this week -- these three clips share something in common. To win, be the first person to identify the song and date of each of the three mystery jam clips, and answer what the three clips share in common. Each person gets one guess per day, with the second “day” starting after I post the hint -- each guess should contain three songs / dates, and a guess at the commonality. No sharing or trading of answers is allowed. A hint will be posted on Tuesday if necessary, with the answer to follow on Wednesday. The winner will receive an MP3 code good for a free download of any show, courtesy of our friends atLivePhish.com / Nugs.Net. Good luck!

Answer: Congrats to @schvice, who wins his sixth (and likely penultimate) MJM, going back-to-back by identifying the seriously tricky 7/16/92 David Bowie, the 11/10/90 Possum, and the 6/30/94 Antelope, all of which were played in towns named "Richmond" (two in VA, one in IN). Which of the six time winners will get their seventh win and be forced into retirement first: @schvice, @WayIFeel, or @ucpete? Find out on Monday, when we take things up a notch in honor of MJM 225.

10 hours without a single guess, but 550 listens. Seems like the guessing crew is in the lab, cranking away on this one.

schvice Well I've got one of them, but I'm not sure yet of the common thread...

schvice 7/16/92 Bowie (!) Richmond, VA

(I listened to so many versions of My Soul, you sonofabitch!)

11/10/90 Possum Richmond, IN

6/30/94 Antelope Richmond, VA

schvice That was a hell of a MJM, by the way! Nice combination of needle-in-haystack tunes, and a frustrating red herring, all of which turned out to be longtime Phish staples, among the ten most commonly played songs.

Oh, and in case it wasn't obvious, the theme was that all three were played in towns named Richmond.

Anyway, thanks as always for a great MJM!

(But you're still a dick for making us listen to all those versions of My Soul)

Seconded. Hilarious, frustrating red herring.

fluffheadj Anyone else think that Trey was in the process of writing It's Ice when they played that Possum? There's some very Icy moves in there! Debuted less than a year later.

I was thinking the exact same thing. I was hoping I could find a 30 second stretch where the rest of the band strayed from Possum a bit more as well, because if you only listen to Trey it's a tough one. Keep listening to that clip for the sweet Foam tease from Trey...

You're right, those are some Icy moves...you could be onto something there.

I never realized until now how early It's Ice was debuted. I always thought this version of Wait was them messing around with the riff that would later become It's Ice, but I see now that It's Ice had actually debuted a month earlier. You learn something new every day on .net!

That's actually where I had started my hunt. There are a couple licks towards the end of the 2nd clip I thought for sure were early It's Ice bits, promptly dug through several early It's Ice-s, failed, pivoted to My Red Herring, and then had to be productive at work again.

uctweezer Question for the guessers, and @schvice in particular:

Do you think this MJM would've been easier or harder had it just been the Bowie (My Soul) clip (i.e. if this were a classic format MJM with the first clip alone)?

My intuition is that it would've been harder, as getting the other two tipped @schvice off to Richmond shows, which led him to abandon My Soul and focus on the ten or so shows from Richmond(s). If "harder" is the consensus answer, acknowledging of course that this isn't the case for every MJM, I think this week's is a big success for the triple MJM format. Because we will have effectively gotten rid of the drive-by first hour winners, turned folks on to three jams instead of one, but haven't necessarily made it more difficult to solve (though it takes more time). Thoughts? I guess I'm just worried that the new format might be turning off too many folks (and the ten hours of radio silence only fed my paranoia!).

funkbeard how the hell did @schvice even find those? I'm completely perplexed.

Yeah, how does your search go from My Soul to a '92 Bowie?

Heh...Long story short, I eliminated My Soul using a highly-skilled technique known as "listening to all of them three times and giving up."

I had already found the Possum, so once I found the Antelope and saw that it was also played in a town named Richmond, the field was narrowed down to something like five 92-94 shows. From there, it was just a matter of trial and error.

Yeah, there's essentially no way I would have figured it out if it was just the Bowie. Nobody would've unless they already knew it, which is where the multiple jams shine. They make it solvable by the average fan, and also prevent it from being immediately solved by some lucky person who just happens to recognize the clip.

I was a bit daunted by the multi-jam MJMs at first, but I see their value now. I do think that's a good idea though, mixing it up from time to time.

I think the radio silence might come from people being afraid to share possible correct answers that other people might be looking for. I know I wasn't about to post that Possum unless I was sure I had all three.
