RIP, JIM STINNETT

We learned of Jim Stinnett while putting together the second edition of The Phish Companion, which had forewords from those who were music teachers to Phish: Jane Ambrose, who taught Trey at the University of Vermont; Paul Asbell, Trey’s guitar teacher at the University of Vermont; Dave Hanlon, Fishman’s only music teacher; Lois Harris, who taught all of them but Mike; and Jim Stinnet, Mike's bass instructor.

Jim taught hundreds of other students, primarily at Berklee College Of Music, before he passed away last Sunday. His family has invited celebration of his life on a Facebook post, and JamBase has assembled some videos including Mike's rememberances and Jim's guest appearance 12/29/95.

Here, we'd like to share Jim's part of that education-focused Foreword from nearly 17 years ago:

GARCIA PEOPLES FEBRUARY 18TH LIVESTREAM TO BENEFIT MOCKINGBIRD

Combining tightly written indie-rock songs with a groundswell of onstage improvisation and psychedelic flourishes, Garcia Peoples are one of the brightest lights of the nascent "indie-jam" scene. The New-Jersey-based band’s late 2020 release Nightcap At Wit’s End (released on Beyond Beyond is Beyond) was their fourth full-length album, and arguably their strongest to date, featuring Rush-ian prog-rock flourishes with Fairport Convention-style folk jams and Pavement-esque 90’s indie; often all within the context of a single song. They’re a force to be reckoned with onstage, but like nearly every band, the pandemic curtailed what would have been extensive touring plans.

Fortunately, on February 18 2021 at 9:00 EST, Garcia Peoples are doing a two-set livestream from Sony Hall in New York City, tickets for which can be purchased here to partly benefit The Mockingbird Foundation: https://www.showclix.com/tickets/garcia-boston

EARLY DAYS OF PHISH EXPLORED IN NEW PODCAST

How did a band with no major label from a small city in Northern Vermont become one of the biggest bands in music within a decade? What were the origins of Phish and what laid the foundation for their cultural timeline and organic growth? In the first episode of Undermine, Phish lyricist Tom Marshall brings in the perspectives of fans and collaborators who saw their rise in Vermont and helped to create the scene that was critical as the band found their groove and structure in the early 80s.

INTERVIEW OF RESCUE SQUAD VIOLINIST KATIE KRESEK

Happy New Year, everyone! Like all of us, I was astounded while watching the recent run of shows Trey and friends put on at The Beacon Theatre. It meant so much to us, and you could see how deeply it affected Trey on a personal level. Yet while watching, it seemed like that was only part of the story. The other musicians contributing were equal parts of this grand adventure. How did they come to be a part of this run? How did it make them feel? Besides being able to work and play music again, how did it affect them on an emotional level to be a part of something so unique and special?

I decided to try and find out. I reached out to Katie Kresek – violinist in the Rescue Squad – who graciously agreed to answer some questions on the topic. Hope you enjoy what she had to say as much as I did!

Stay safe and healthy and cheers to 2021!!!

Kind Regards,
David Beckwith
(@slewfoot)

* * * * *

DB: How long have you been playing the violin?

KK: I've been playing since the age of five. I come from a long line of professional and amateur musicians, many of whom played the violin.

DB: Have you played with rock n roll musicians in concerts before?

KK: Definitely. I've spent most of my career playing for songwriters and with a variety of musical artists either on tour or in recording studios. There is a full bio of the artists I've worked with on my website, but some favorites include David Byrne, St. Vincent, James Taylor, Paul Simon, Adele, and Diana Krall. I also play on Broadway, which incorporates many different musical styles into the mix.

REMEMBERING 12/31/95

IT has been twenty-five years, but Phish’s performance on 12/31/95 at Madison Square Garden continues to be among Phish’s most legendary shows. A favorite of countless fans of improvisational rock music, the magnificently unplacid performance will be streamed by Phish as a “Dinner And A [Chess] Rematch” this New Year’s Eve in support of The Waterwheel Foundation, the band’s charitable organization founded in 1997.

INTERVIEW OF TREY BEFORE 12/14/95 BINGHAMTON (NEWLY RELEASED)

[We would like to thank Dave Berman for the following reflections and for the release of his interview of Trey conducted between soundcheck and the show on Dec. 14, 1995. -Ed.]

You could say I was born in the taper section. In the mid 1970’s, Grandpa Jimmy recorded three-year-old me singing and proudly answering questions about my birthday, address, and parents’ names. In January 2020, I found a few such cassettes, along with the reason you’re reading this.

The tapes turned up in the final few weeks of helping Dad downsize from a house to an apartment. The move was never possible while Mom was still alive, thanks to her hoarding.
