With my ears still ringing and my adrenaline still pumping, I wanted to send a quick review of tonight's show before I hit the sack. I'll let Brian Feller have the honors of posting the set list (besides, I didn't write it down), but below are some personal highlights: First, the State Theater in Kalamazoo was a treat in its self! It was a small, very intimate venue, with a pretty good sized dance floor and not too eagle-eyed security staff (they seemed to look the other way in the rather obvious presence of doobage). Did any one else notice the little stars that dotted the ceiling? They really looked like stars when the lights were off! Basically, it was a great place to see a show. Only one criticism of the venue: The sound in the place wasn't all that good. Maybe it was were I was (close to the front on Page's side), but it was difficult to hear Trey's guitar clearly sometimes. In spite of this though, the band was definitely on. They all seemed to be into the scene, the crowd, and the venue. Songs (in random order) that really stood out: Reba: What can I say? Trey can really play! YEM: Same as above, but with even more emphasis. Maze: I really like this song a lot! Tonight's jam was particularly spectacular Tweezer Reprise: What a way to end the show! Vacuum Solo: Most excellent. I was standing right in front of the Bass speakers in front of the stage, and my whole body was being vibrated by the low notes (I know that may sound strange, but it was fun at the time) Ball Jam: the first time I have seen this. Great idea. I could go on and on, but I have got to get some sleep. This show was definitely worth the 200+ mi. round trip through the snow!!!!! I can't wait till tomorrow night (Ann Arbor), but I am not sure how it can top tonight's show. See you all tomorrow at Espresso Royale before the show!! I am so happy! --Jonah :-) -------------------------------------- From: brian.feller@um.cc.umich.edu Subject: State Theater, Kalamazoo, Michigan 12/10 Reply-To: brian.feller@um.cc.umich.edu Date: Fri, 11 Dec 1992 17:38:46 GMT State Theater, Kalamazoo 12-10-92 I II Golgi Apparatus Rift Llama Tweezeer=> (spacey meltdown) Foam Tela Fee My Sweet One=> Poor Heart Big Ball Jam! There wasn't the group energy level that was present at Chicago, and maybe it was because there were still a few hundred tickets still on sale at show time. It appeared that a large part of this crowd had never seen Phish before, so at first it was mellow, but after Golgi then LLama then Foam, you couldn't beg someone to sit down. The State Theater is an amazing place. The architecture on the inside of the place makes you think you're standing in some midieval Spanish village, and the ceiling is painted as the night sky, complete with lighted stars and moving wispy clouds! It is truly at nice place. The band remarked that is was the nicest venue on the tour so far. Plus they had Bells Amber Ale, which comes from a local Kalamazoo brewery, and is some of the finest beer around. Foam was amazing, and I realize why they like to play it so much, you can take that middle jam anywhere! I can't think of much else about set I, except that Fishman's breast plate solo during I Didn't Know was killer. Reba was killer(I have never seen a bad one), and it took a while to get the crowd to quiet down for Adeline. Set II was really sweet. They are playing Rift a lot lately and it is getting better and tighter as they do it more. Last nights version was extremely tight. The jam in Tweezer started off very mediocre, then they decided to do something completely different, and brought it down to a spacey jam, and the song concluded with a different ending than the usual weirdness, and floated right into Tela. The Big Ball Jam lasted a long time, and by the end it was one ball and the whole band was jamming on that ball. Someone grabbed it and held on to it, shaking it, which produced great sounds from the band. Maze was once again smokin', with a nice long organ solo(Ilove that sound!). At the jam section of You Enjoy Myself, they did something that I've never seen or heard. INstead of the whole band playing while Trey took his solo, Mike and Page dropped out, and Trey walked in front of Fish's drums for a Fish/Trey duet! It was superb. Trey really went off against the drums. Then Mike and Page did a duet that was equally as cool, then a bass solo, then the vocal jam. Very nice indeed. At the end of Honey Love You, which had a vacuum solo, Fish took a running leap into the audience (there would be more stage diving at the end of Tweezer Reprise by the crowd)! What a madman. He severely ripped his Captain Zero dress. Axis was a surprise, and Trey said it was a request from Bob, the guy who drives the equipment truck. Well, this has definitley been long enough, so I'll see you tomorrow. -Brian
