In this reviewer's opinion, the best Sand of 3.0 and rivals any from previous eras. Don't skip this one.

A truly glorious piece of hose that wouldn't have been out of place in Summer 2015. 10/31/16 II is a pretty dang good set that shouldn't be missed.

'And TAB gives me a different perspective on Phish. For Instance, I couldn't stand the way "Sand" sounded with Phish; it gave me the willies. The groove was just so not right. Finally last summer I sat down with Jon Fishman and said, "Can we examine how we're doing this song?" So he listened to Russ [Lawton] playing it and said, "Oh my God, I'm playing the groove all wrong. It's not on the chart, nor is that any sort of crime against humanity or anything, but this version is just pure butter from start to finish. I remember people in the show thread going "man, that FTW practicing really paid off". Yes, it did. Yes, it did.

As far as great musical moments go, it's pretty hard to argue against the swerve into "School's Out" at the end of what had been a pretty nifty funk-laden jam being one of 2014's top moments. A deservedly noteworthy jam from one of Phish's (already) iconic shows.

An awesome Sand, really gets grooving and makes you dance. Not quite as good as the previous year's Dick's Sand in terms of exploration, but definitely in the top tier of Sands overall.

One of the best improvisations Phish has ever created. Clearly a Type 2, but they exhibit such clarity in their 3-4(-5) movements away from the usual Sand territory. Amazing full-band modulation, rhythmic coherence, and patience to ride out each sequence. Unrivaled, in my opinion, in Phish improvisation.

I actually prefer this to Dick's Light.

Simply glorious! Everything about this jam is tasty...great full band jamming, soaring guitar, a return to the Sand theme at the end, and even a beautiful -> Ghost

Wow. What an awesome Sand. Slower version but really crisp and jamming. Fucking love it.

An "outlier" jam, in that there are few examples of extended improve from the first leg of the Summer '09 tour, and certainly none that stand out like this. Listening to this jam 7 years later, it sounds like it would fit right in with the best of 2015 or any other year of Phish 3.0.

This one rips as hard or harder than Cypress. Raging Sand!

Probably my favorite version of all-time of one of my top 5 favorite Phish songs. Not sure how this one doesn't merit being highlighted in yellow.

I guess you had to be there, cuz this Sand is boooorrrriiiinnnnggg. Solid groove, but not much else.

I'll just put it out here; I'm a sucker for the '99-'00 sound and this Sand is a big reason why. I love the rhythm textures, the dark ambiance, the Mike grooves, the delay loops, most anything. And this jam has all that.

Sure, there may be "better" (Dick's 2012, Cypress, etc.) but I think for me, this Sand is the closest Phish jam to embody the sound they were going for back in the late '90's. Obviously, I'm going to be biased in my review because of the fact I LOVE this period for the band (for the music, not the drugs/scene/whatnot) but I'll do my best to give this Sand the justice it deserves.

To start the jam, Trey wastes no time hopping on the delay looping effects with 2 (maybe 3?) loops happening. This makes for a very eerie atmosphere and gives the jam a sort-of "presence." I don't know how else to explain it-I feel like I'm being propelled into deep outer space when this part kicks in (and I'm pretty sure I wasn't dosed).

Up next-it's the odd sounding keyboard Trey so loved during this time. It only adds to the spaciness of the jam, and Page hops in to help, all the while Mike keeps playing his rocking bass groove and Fish helps hold down the rhythm section.

If I'm not mistaken, this takes up probably the first 10 or so minutes. It's been a little while and I can't remember exact timings. Anyway, if I'm right, then Trey grabs the guitar for some lead playing. Starting out subtle to blend in with the background, Trey gradually makes his way forward with the volume getting louder and the tone getting clearer. Page decides at this point that he too will show off some abilities and the two work together to build a solid lead duo with Mike and Fish still holding off the rhythm. At this point, Trey and Page are on fire, playing off each other like they were damn pros (well, who am I kidding?)

I don't use the word "hose" very often, but I'd say the final couple minutes of this jam are apt to that term. If not, I'll go with "melodious," "beautiful," "awe-inspiring," or any combination of those words. In other words, this is one for the ages, but really only if you really like what they were doing sound-wise back then. I love this era, so I'm biased, and someone who likes Spring '92 Phish the best may avoid this era (or Sand in general), or they may not, but either way this one is worth checking out. It's got kind of the "best of both worlds"-spacey/trippy effects-laden grooves with shredding Trey leading to a glorious peak.

This jam gets my stamp of approval. A solid 9/10. Highly recommended.
