MYSTERY JAM MONDAY PART 280

Welcome to the 280th edition of Phish.Net's Mystery Jam Monday, the final and most difficult of June. The winner will receive an MP3 download code courtesy of our friends at LivePhish.com / Nugs.Net. To win, be the first person to identify the songs and dates of the three mystery clips – these clips are connected by a theme, but the theme needn't be part of the answer (though trust me on this one: it's going to be even more difficult if you don't pick up on the theme this week). Each person gets one guess – if no one guesses correctly, I will post a hint on Tuesday around 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET, after which each person gets one more guess before I reveal the correct answer on Wednesday around 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET. Good luck!

Hint: It would've been nice to have had another clip this week, but though Phish has played "El Paso," they've never played in El Paso.

Answer: Pencils down! Thanks to the excellent idea from MJM Emeritus @runlikecarini, the Blog has its 20th victory in 279 (plus one voided contest) tries! The key to this week's MJM: Think of London, small city (6/16/97 I Don't Care); There's a lot of bridges / rich people in, Birmingham (5/2/94 Mike's Song -> Jam with Oteil Burbridge); Did I forget to mention Memphis? (6/14/95 Don't You Want to Go?). But what was the hint all about? In the Talking Heads alternate version of "Cities," there's another verse before Memphis:

Down El Paso way things get pretty spread out
People got no idea where in the world they are
They go up north and come back south
Still got no idea where in the world they are.

Come back on Monday when the difficulty drops back to "considerably easier" in MJM281, while two codes will be awarded.

Note: MJM Emeriti – stay tuned for an email.

FunkyCFunkyDo You know the Simpsons episode where Homer falls through the roof of Alec Baldwin's and Kim Bassinger's house, they befriend each other, and then they send Homer to run their errands? Ok good. This MJM Monday is like when Homer goes into the Kwik-E-Mart asking Apu for a variety of mushrooms:

Homer: Apu, I'm about to purchase some weird and fruity items, and I don't want any guff. First of all, I'll need the following mushrooms: Portobello.
Apu: Yes.
Homer: Porcini.
Apu: Right.
Homer: Chanterelle.
Apu: Uh-huh.
Homer: And Shiitake.
Apu: Okay. We have none of those.

Now replace Homer with @ucpete, Apu with @FunkyCFunkyDo, and the mushrooms with the jams, and you have my answer to this week's MJM.

Sorry to be cheeky but technically for this one you replace homer with me :) and I'm counting on you Funky after I solved your 03 Shoreline theme... though this one is admittedly more difficult. good luck!!

A Simpsons reference from the guy whose avatar is a screenshot from my favorite Simpsons episode. Excellent. Tomorrow's vague hint: Someone was on mushrooms at each one of the shows where these jams were played.

If you have one you still have time.... as Pete alluded to in the original post, the theme is key here
, comment by TwiceBitten
TwiceBitten oh believe me, I've busted out some geography and mathematics and I'm still stumped even with the hint.
, comment by TwiceBitten
TwiceBitten well now I have a pretty solid speculation on what the theme is, but I still haven't figured out what the other two clips are.
, comment by WayIFeel
WayIFeel I can't participate but I have 2 of 3 clips and still can't figure out the hint.
, comment by TwiceBitten
TwiceBitten ugh... spent an hour following my idea for the theme/hint and I'm still coming up with nothing

put me out of my misery!

I think that's an official win for the blog so I'll let you know that if you have 2 of 3 take a look and where those two jams were played. Should lead you to the third.
, comment by runlikecarini
runlikecarini Ah Pete posted right as I did! Ignore me now!!
, comment by TwiceBitten
TwiceBitten lol that theme is ridiculous. I was thinking the shows were played in cities in the western most part of the state based on the El Paso hint. Worked for clip 3 in Memphis... oh well
, comment by WayIFeel
WayIFeel Ok, so I had the 6/16/97 I Don't Care and the 6/14/95 Don't You Wanna Go (@ucpete can confirm this). So a few things jumped out at me with those clips. First thing I noticed were the dates: 6/14/95 and 6/16/97 so I looked for 6/15/96 which doesn't exist so I then started checking all 6/15 shows with no luck. Then I noticed both clips song titles had the word DON'T so I started down that path and again no luck. Finally, I noticed venues were in Memphis and London so I started considering Cities but I never thought to check Birmingham, D'Oh! (sticking with the Simpsons theme in the comments).

Great MJM this week and congrats on the blogs 20th win. Looking forward to this weeks email.

lysergic Nice work, blog. I'd never heard "Don't You Want to Go" before. Now I can't get it out of my head.

At one point I thought "Broncos" was part of a hint and rifled through the OJ show for the 2nd clip.
